Books like Thin Ice by Sir Compton Mackenzie

Thin Ice traces the friendship between Henry Fortescue, a charismatic but politically ambitious MP who conceals his homosexuality, and George Gaymer, a good‑hearted but unremarkable supporter, over four decades of British imperial politics. From their first meeting at Oxford to Henry’s career in Parliament and beyond, the novel follows their journeys across London, Morocco, Hampshire, Kenya, the Seychelles, and Somerset. Mackenzie’s narrative balances the tension between Henry’s public ambitions and his private constraints, and examines the resilience of a bond that endures political differences and scandal. Through subtle prose he captures the changing landscape of the empire while keeping the reader engaged. The story is framed by the moral dilemmas of discretion and the complexities of a same‑sex identity in a repressive era.
