Books like Look down in mercy by Walter Baxter

Look Down in Mercy, Walter Baxter’s 1951 debut, is set in Burma as Captain Tony Kent arrives awaiting combat. Under relentless heat and looming conflict, Kent drifts into drinking, casual sex, and inner darkness. When hostilities erupt, his cowardice spirals into treason and cold‑blooded murder. Amid artillery fire and societal condemnation, the only solace he finds is love for his batman, Anson. Baxter’s narrative confronts the overlooked taboos of war novels, exploring moral disintegration, identity, and forbidden affection among soldiers. The book achieved both bestseller status and critical acclaim. Baxter’s subsequent work, The Image and the Search, sparked obscenity charges and ended his career, but Look Down in Mercy remains notable for its candid portrayal of wartime turmoil and LGBTQ themes before Stonewall.
