Decades later, after years of writing on travel and adventure, Leigh Fermor shared the story of that formative voyage in works such as *A Time of Gifts* and *Between the Woods and the Water*.  *The broken road* is the detailed and eagerly awaited account of the final leg of his youthful adventure—a narrative he promised to complete but could not before his death in 2011. The volume draws on Leigh Fermor’s original manuscripts, brought together by his prize‑winning biographer Artemis Cooper and the travel writer Colin Thubron.
