Books like The unquiet grave by Sharyn McCrumb

Sharyn McCrumb’s novel is a meticulously researched dramatization of the Greenbrier Ghost murder trial at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It centers on James P.D. Gardner, the first African‑American lawyer to practice in West Virginia, who leads the defense of a white farmer charged with killing his young bride. The story is anchored in a haunting folklore legend that alleges the victim’s spirit sought justice. McCrumb draws upon genealogy, court records, and contemporary accounts to illuminate the personalities involved—Gardner, a former Union soldier who owned slaves; the prosecutor, a former Confederate cavalryman; and the grieving mother who clung to the ghost narrative. Through these perspectives, the novel explores themes of race, justice, and the supernatural in a deeply divided region.
