Books like Someone else's skin by Sarah Hilary

DI Marnie Rome is a seasoned investigator who has never shared her past. Five years ago, a violent crime took her parents and left her foster brother behind bars. With a partner who keeps his own secrets, Marnie is called to a women's shelter to investigate a domestic‑violence case involving Hope Proctor, who has stabbed her abusive husband. As Marnie and DS Noah Jake interview shelter residents, conflicting stories surface and the line between victim and suspect grows increasingly unclear. The shelter houses See’s, a dangerous family unit, and Marnie must balance her duty to police procedure with the delicate dynamics of a community of survivors. With past trauma looming and a new threat on the horizon, Marnie’s investigation forces her to confront the shadows of her own history while navigating the complex safety needs of the shelter’s residents.
