Books like That kind of mother by Rumaan Alam

In Rumaan Alam’s novel, Rebecca Stone, a first‑time mother, finds herself overwhelmed by the demands of raising her newborn son. She turns to hospital staff for support and is introduced to Priscilla Johnson, a black nanny who becomes an unexpected confidante. Priscilla’s presence challenges Rebecca’s perceptions of race, privilege, and what it means to be a mother. After Priscilla dies unexpectedly in childbirth, Rebecca decides to adopt her dying friend’s son, taking on the responsibility of raising a black child in a white household while grappling with societal expectations and her own personal growth. Alam explores the complexities of parenthood, motherhood, family life and race relations with nuance, irony, and psychological depth, offering a thought‑provoking examination of love, responsibility and the boundaries of social class.
