Books like Someone Like You [18 stories] by Roald Dahl

First published by Alfred Knopf in 1953, *Someone Like You* gathers 18 of Roald Dahl’s early short stories, showcasing his developing voice that deftly mixes levity with sinister twists. The volume contains fan‑favorites such as “Lamb to the Slaughter,” “Man from the South,” and “The Soldier,” as well as lesser‑known gems like “Taste” and “Great Automatic Grammatizator.” Through these varied narratives, Dahl explores ordinary and extraordinary settings—from World War I trenches to modern London, from stockbroker offices to cruise ships—often turning the mundane into the macabre or absurd. The collection’s stories span several themes: black comedy, detective intrigue, and the darker side of human nature. Dahl’s concise prose and unexpected endings make *Someone Like You* an essential early text for readers and scholars interested in his work’s evolution. Recognized as a cornerstone of 20th‑century short fiction, the anthology remains a vital illustration of Dahl’s skill at crafting memorable characters and punchy climaxes within the constraints of a single volume.
