Books like The melody lingers on by Mary Higgins Clark

Lane Harmon, celebrated assistant to a prominent interior designer, thrives on the glamorous lives she touches across the tri‑state area. When she is hired to decorate a modest Bergen County townhouse, her curiosity turns to intrigue: the home belongs to the wife of Parker Bennett, a disgraced financier missing for two years after a $5 billion fund he managed vanished in the Caribbean. The case draws federal interest, spires re‑investigation, and raises questions of suicide versus staged disappearance. Lane finds herself empathizing with Mrs. Bennett’s calm dignity and believing in her husband’s innocence, while also developing a connection with Mark, Bennett’s son, who is equally determined to clear his father’s name. Little does Lane know that the deeper she gets into the Bennett mystery, the greater the danger to her life and to her daughter’s future.
