Books like A modern Mephistopheles, and A whisper in the dark by Louisa May Alcott

Out in 1877, Louisa May Alcott published the Gothic thriller A Modern Mephistopheles and a Whisper in the Dark with the Robertsons. The story centers on two youthful romantics, Felix Canaris and Gladys, who find their fragile relationship besieged by Jasper Helwyze, a wealthy, semi‑valid figure whose manipulation drives them into marriage as part of a psychological experiment. Alcott's novel mirrors thematic elements from Goethe’s Faust and incorporates stylistic touches from her earlier fiction. Through the crises they face, Felix and Gladys confront and ultimately overcome Helwyze’s controlling grip, exposing the dangers of manipulation and psychological control. The narrative offers a sharp exploration of man‑woman dynamics, manipulation, and the psychological control exerted by a dominant figure over young love, set within the broader context of 19th‑century American fiction.
