Books like You must remember this by Joyce Carol Oates

Set against the backdrop of a mid‑century industrial, working‑class town in upstate New York, "You Must Remember This" follows the intertwined lives of the Carters—a family that struggles between societal expectations and personal yearning. The novel portrays a troubling marriage between parents Lyle and Hannah, a son, Warren, who pursues a spirited political path, and the intensely obsessive relationship that blooms between the 15‑year‑old Enid Maria and her uncle Felix, a professional boxer twice her age. Oates draws a vivid picture of a decade that revered conformity while revealing how each character breaks conventions in their quest for meaning. Through the family’s internal conflicts, the book interrogates themes of love, duty, and the limits of secrecy, highlighting the tension between ordinary life and the hidden depths of the heart.
