Books like Stuckey by Elizabeth McCants Drinnon

Williamson Sylvester Stuckey grew up on a farm near Eastman, Dodge County, Georgia, in 1909 and left the University of Georgia to work on the family farm during the Great Depression. With a $35 loan from his grandmother, he started a roadside shack selling pecans and later candy, which became the seed for a multi‑million dollar chain of convenience and fast‑food restaurants that would eventually reach 350 locations across the United States. Stuckey introduced the one‑stop shopping concept early in the industry and was a pioneer of franchise management, ensuring consistent quality across his growing network. He also provided a rare, integrated public space for black travelers during a time of segregation, attracting guests who could use his store restrooms. His life exemplifies the self‑made entrepreneur, rising from modest beginnings to become a household name in American food service.
