Books like The Shadow of Saganami by David Weber

The Star Kingdom of Manticore has entered a second conflict with the Republic of Haven after a surprise raid, and the newly graduated midshipmen of Saganami Island are immediately deployed to the front lines. Assigned to the heavy cruiser HMS Hexapuma, the cadets find themselves fighting a relentless series of engagements against raiders, pirate vessels and insurgent forces in the Talbott Cluster. Far from the expected peace and integration of the Cluster with the Star Kingdom, the midshipmen confront a covert alliance of Solarian League officials and interstellar corporations intent on preventing annexation at any cost. Amidst pirate tactics, technological smuggling, and the shadow of political corruption, the courage and training of the new officers—together with Captain of the Hexapuma—are put to the ultimate test. The setting provides a backdrop of high‑stakes space warfare and corporate machinations, illustrating the harsh realities of naval service when ideals clash with the pragmatic interests of powerful entities. The story showcases the challenges faced by young sailors adapted to a world of brutal conflict, while exploring concepts such as political loyalty, corporate exploitation, and the traditions of naval duty.
