Zoya Phan grew up in the remote jungles of Burma among the Karen people, a community that had long resisted the country’s brutal military junta. At thirteen, her peaceful childhood was disrupted when the Burmese army launched an attack, plunging her into two harrowing years of flight. Joined by many refugees, she survived perilously in the jungle, losing family members and narrowly escaping death. She finally found shelter in a Thai refugee camp, where she remained until 2005. After moving to the United Kingdom and claiming asylum, Zoya became a prominent public advocate for the Burmese struggle for freedom, sharing her inspirational journey of resilience and advocacy.
