Books like Water, stone, heart by Will North

Andrew Stratton, a divorced college professor of architectural theory in Philadelphia, finds himself adrift after his wife leaves him for another man. Seeking new purpose, he follows a week‑long course opportunity in the rugged village of Boscastle, England, where he learns the ancient practice of stone walling under the guidance of a weathered instructor. While working with the local stone, Andrew becomes immersed in a community rich with song, history, and a quirky mix of residents—from a nature‑communing nine‑year‑old to a reclusive reverend. The village’s rhythms and landscape of cliffs, valleys, and stone hedges inspire him to let go of his guarded heart. In Boscastle, Andrew also meets Nicola Rhys‑Jones, an American expatriate artist whose own history of abuse shadows her calm—a contrast to Andrew’s scholarly detachment. Their intellectual sparring and growing affection force Andrew to confront whether he is simply a tourist or if he can truly belong in this transformative setting.
