Books like Beyond the Blue Mountains by Victoria Holt

The story spans late eighteenth‑century London and early nineteenth‑century Australia, tracing the lives of Kitty Kennedy, her daughter Katharine, and Katharine’s child Carolan. Kitty’s love is lost before Carolan is born, and Katharine is forced into a perilous existence. Carolan, described as sensitive, proud, bold, and reckless, endures the harshest trials. Her experiences in London’s East End, at Newgate Prison and on a prison ship bound for Australia, are depicted with vivid clarity. After surviving the voyage, Carolan finds herself in the household of Masterman in Sydney, where she transforms from an innocent girl into a ruthless woman determined to secure her place in the family. The novel portrays a vivid cast of characters—Marcus, Kitty, Margery, Katharine, Masterman, the pious Esther, and Carolan—juxtaposing crime and horror with moments of luxury and hope as they reach toward better times beyond the symbolic Blue Mountains.
