Books like The Secret River by Kate Grenville

In 1806 London, William Thornhill, a waterman of the River Thames, finds his life irrevocably altered when a serious mistake lands him and his family in a sentence of infinite transportation to New South Wales. The novel follows Thornhill’s arduous journey from the familiar banks of the Thames to the unforgiving terrain of early Australia, a land where penal colonies and land tenure practices shape the fabric of society. Through Thornhill’s experience Kate Grenville examines the stark contrasts between his former life and his new existence, exploring the hard choices of a man who must navigate loyalty to family, personal redemption, and the struggle to establish belonging in a colony where land is both coveted and contested. The narrative weaves history and human drama, offering insight into the broader context of 19th‑century penal transportation and the evolving concept of property and identity in colonial Australia.
