Books like A Deepness in the Sky (Zones of Thought) by Vernor Vinge

Set thirty thousand years before the events of *A Fire upon the Deep*, *A Deepness in the Sky* follows Pham Nuwen, a Qeng Ho trader living quietly within an interstellar fleet above the planet Arachna. The fleet awaits the return of Arachna’s light, which will awaken the planet’s buried Spiders and usher in a Golden Age of commerce and technology. However, a hostile group known as the Emergents, whose ambitions for Arachna run deeper than the Qeng Ho could imagine, launch a brutal assault that reduces the fleet’s members to serfdom and pushes the planet and its people into a desperate struggle for survival. Pham, reaching into his painful memories, rallies the remaining survivors and attempts to restore the reputation and independence of the Qeng Ho while the Spiders underground advance rapidly to counter the terrestrial threat and confront an unseen enemy. The novel explores themes of resistance, technological progression, and the complex interplay between interstellar and planetary civilizations amid looming danger.
