Books like Don't Tell Mummy by Toni Maguire

Toni Maguire’s memoir details the devastating reality behind a seemingly idyllic childhood in Ireland. At six, her father’s inappropriate advances first struck, and only years later did she find the courage to confide in her mother. Instead of support, her mother demanded silence, forcing Toni to endure her trauma in isolation. Through candid recollection, Maguire exposes the subtle and overt signs of abuse that many adult survivors have overlooked for decades. She describes how the long-term effects of incest and sexual exploitation shape an adult’s sense of self, trust, and mental health, while simultaneously celebrating the inner strength that led her to share her story. The book offers a profound look at the importance of speaking out, the complexities of family dynamics in abuse situations, and the resilience required to redeem one’s life story into a testimony of hope and survival.
