Books like Beg For Mercy by Toni Andrews

Mercy Hollings never knew whether she was truly human, yet her power—briefly called the ‘press’—compels anyone who hears her speak to obey without hesitation. Though her childhood and medical tests confirm her humanity, the effect of her ability has made her both a sought‑after consultant and a feared isolate. When a stranger arrives, intent on destroying the new life she has built, Mercy’s temper threatens her relationships with friends, clients, and neighbors. Complications arise as her friend Sukey’s bizarre preferences, her own guarded secrets, and the paralysis of her power combine. Now she must reckon with the danger that her wrath could hurt those she cares about. The story follows Mercy as she navigates the perils of having control and the possibility that the very power that gives her agency may be the cause of her most profound insecurity.
