Books like When a Scot Ties the Knot by Tessa Dare

Miss Madeline Gracechurch stands on the brink of her first London season, shy, picturesque, and adept with a drawing pencil, yet clumsy around men. Believing the London marriage market to be a doomed battlefield for her, Maddie follows a familiar escape: she creates a romantic double. Her invented lover, a Scottish gentleman named Captain MacKenzie, is handsome, honorable, and wholly devoted, though he never actually appears. Maddie pours her heart into writing endless letters to the imaginary captain, even feigning sorrow when he is “killed in battle,” a ruse that lets her sidestep societal pressures. Years later, the kilted Highlander of her daydreams materializes on her doorstep. The real Captain Logan MacKenzie, handsome yet ethically ambiguous, is wounded, jaded, and in possession of her letters. He is ready to honor every promise she never imagined keeping, forcing Maddie to reconcile her crafted romance with the complexities of an actual man and the realities of love.
