Books like The Shadowy Horses by Susanna Kearsley

Susanna Kearsley’s *The Shadowy Horses* follows Verity Grey, a dedicated archaeologist, as she travels to the windswept Southern Borderlands of Scotland. Drawn by her eccentric supervisor’s obsession with locating the lost Ninth Roman Legion, Verity embarks on an excavation that may reveal more than ancient artifacts. In an area steeped in folklore, Verity encounters strange sightings—a local boy reports seeing a Roman soldier marching in the fields, a ghostly guardian of forgotten bodies. As the investigation deepens, she must decide whether the myth is a psychological trick or a real phenomenon, all while confronting the possibility that some truths are deliberately concealed. The novel blends historical intrigue with suspense, exploring themes of female agency in archaeology, the weight of legends, and the moral complexities of uncovering buried pasts in a modern Scottish landscape.
