Books like The Forest Lover by Susan Vreeland

Emily Carr, the pioneering Canadian painter, captivated the early 20th‑century art world with her modern, inventive depictions of the British Columbian landscape. Vreeland’s portrait chronicles Carr’s journey from the fading wilderness of her homeland—its indigenous villages, tribal customs, and encroaching industry—to her active role in Paris’s burgeoning modernist and cubist circles in 1911. The narrative follows Carr’s personal transformation: overcoming self‑doubt, engaging in tribal potlatches, courting a French fur trader, and ultimately choosing a life less ordinary. It frames her as a woman who confronted hypocrisy and injustice, remaining steadfast to herself and her art. The book offers historians, artists, and readers a richly detailed account of Carr’s influence on Canadian art and her legacy as a woman who forged an uncompromising creative path.
