Books like Cranford by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell

Elizabeth Gaskell’s *Cranford* was first serialized in Charles Dickens’ magazine *Household Words* between 1851 and 1853. Comprised of brief, loosely connected stories, the work was created while Gaskell was writing her novel *Ruth* and was not originally intended as a single cohesive novel. The vignettes follow the everyday activities and social customs of the inhabitants of Cranford, a fictional small town in the English countryside. Gaskell based the setting and characters on her own childhood in Knutsford, imbuing the scenes with a nostalgic tone that reflects a society whose manners and fashions were already becoming passé. Though it was not particularly popular at the time of its publication, *Cranford* has since earned a dedicated readership and has inspired at least three television adaptations.
