Books like Redgauntlet by Sir Walter Scott

In 1765, Darsie Latimer sets out from his home in Dumfriesshire to discover the truth of his parentage. While traversing the Scottish countryside he is kidnapped by a Jacobite conspirator and drawn into a secret plot to restore the Stuarts to the British throne. His Edinburgh friend, the lawyer Alan Fairford, searches for Darsie and encounters a world where the rule of law is largely ignored and covert loyalty to the exiled monarchy persists. The novel weaves together the oral tradition of Scottish folklore, such as the tale of ‘Wandering Willie’, with the political turmoil of the period. Through Darsie’s experience, the story contrasts the romanticized vision of a pre‑Hanoverian Scotland with the realities of peace under the new regime.
