Books like Silence for the dead by Simone St. James

Portis House emerges from the mist as a long, low shadow in 1919, its former grandeur reduced to a shell of a war hospital for shell‑shocked soldiers. Kitty Weekes, a resourceful young nurse with a fabricated past, secures a position there, hoping to prove herself amid the mistreated veterans. The patients endure nervous attacks and recurring, terrifying dreams, all bound by a common nightmare that none dare to speak of. As the ancient plumbing groans and cold drafts seep through the crumbling plaster, Kitty discovers that something far more sinister roams the estate. She allies with Jack Yates, an inmate whose past may be that of a war hero or a madman. Together they delve into the mystery, confronting spectral presences and uncovering a terrifying truth that could engulf them both. With a looming medical catastrophe isolating the surviving souls, the pair must confront the haunting forces alone, navigating both the psychological traumas of war and the malevolent spirits that haunt the walls of Portis House.
