Books like Lost among the living by Simone St. James

Set in England during 1921, Jo Manders is still grieving the disappearance of her husband, Alex, who vanished in a wartime aircraft crash over Germany. After three years, she accepts a position as a paid companion to Alex’s wealthy aunt, Dottie Forsyth, and travels to the Forsyth family’s estate in the Sussex countryside. At Wych Elm House, Jo uncovers unsettling truths about Alex’s origins and learns that a mysterious death in the Forsyths’ past has left lingering shadows. With the family’s patriarch distant, a war‑injured son, and locals speaking of curses and restless spirits in the woods, Jo finds herself pursued through empty halls, disconcertingly rearranged belongings, and an eerie sense of possession. The revelation of hidden family secrets forces her to question what she truly knew of her husband, while a familiar stranger’s arrival threatens to unravel what remains of her sense of self.
