📘 Memoirs of an Infantry Officer by Siegfried Sassoon

Memoirs of an Infantry Officer opens Siegfried Sassoon’s semi‑autobiographical George Sherston trilogy, chronicling the young soldier’s rapid progression from enthusiastic Fox‑hunter to frontline infantry in 1916. After enduring the brutality of trench warfare and sustaining a lung wound, he is sent home to recover. The book follows his growing disillusionment with the war and the British military establishment, culminating in a public anti‑war declaration that echoes Sassoon’s real 1917 letter read in the House of Commons. Through vivid portrayals of battlefield hardships and the rigid class structures of wartime England, the memoir offers a powerful personal narrative of war and its psychological toll.
