Books like The Tyrant Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson

The Tyrant Baru Cormorant sees the stakes higher than ever. After fifteen years of manipulation, Baru finally wields the power to topple the Imperial Republic of Falcrest, which she has been pretending to serve. Yet the secret society, the Cancrioth, is real, and its weapon threatens to unleash the ancient hemorrhagic plague known as the Kettling. If unchecked, the disease will kill hundreds of millions across the globe, staining history in black blood. Meanwhile, enemies, both external and internal, close in from every side. Baru’s mind teeters on the brink of madness or revelation, and she is forced to choose between genocidal vengeance and a far more arduous path: a vast conspiracy of judges, kings, spies and immortals who manipulate the world’s fortunes. The outcome will determine whether Falcrest can be forced to abandon its colonies and correct its past crimes or be lost forever.
