The Road by 7101959|Cormac McCarthy book cover

๐Ÿ“˜ The Road

Cormac McCarthy's tenth novel, The Road, is his most harrowing yet deeply personal work. Some unnamed catastrophe has scourged the world to a burnt-out cinder, inhabited by the last remnants of mankind and a very few surviving dogs and fungi. The sky is perpetually shrouded by dust and toxic particulates; the seasons are merely varied intensities of cold and dampness. Bands of cannibals roam the roads and inhabit what few dwellings remain intact in the woods. Through this nightmarish residue of America a haggard father and his young son attempt to flee the oncoming Appalachian winter and head towards the southern coast along carefully chosen back roads. Mummified corpses are their only benign companions, sitting in doorways and automobiles, variously impaled or displayed on pikes and tables and in cake bells, or they rise in frozen poses of horror and agony out of congealed asphalt. The boy and his father hope to avoid the marauders, reach a milder climate, and perhaps locate some remnants of civilization still worthy of that name. They possess only what they can scavenge to eat, and the rags they wear and the heat of their own bodies are all the shelter they have. A pistol with only a few bullets is their only defense besides flight. Before them the father pushes a shopping cart filled with blankets, cans of food and a few other assets, like jars of lamp oil or gasoline siphoned from the tanks of abandoned vehiclesโ€”the cart is equipped with a bicycle mirror so that they will not be surprised from behind. Through encounters with other survivors brutal, desperate or pathetic, the father and son are both hardened and sustained by their will, their hard-won survivalist savvy, and most of all by their love for each other. They struggle over mountains, navigate perilous roads and forests reduced to ash and cinders, endure killing cold and freezing rainfall. Passing through charred ghost towns and ransacking abandoned markets for meager provisions, the pair battle to remain hopeful. They seek the most rudimentary sort of salvation. However, in The Road, such redemption as might be permitted by their circumstances depends on the boyโ€™s ability to sustain his own instincts for compassion and empathy in opposition to his fatherโ€™s insistence upon their mutual self-interest and survival at all physical and moral costs. The Road was the winner of the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Literature. ([source][1]) [1]: https://www.cormacmccarthy.com/works/the-road/

 by Andy Weir

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance missionโ€“and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesnโ€™t know that. He canโ€™t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that heโ€™s been asleep for a very, very long time. And heโ€™s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company. His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, he realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Alone on this tiny ship thatโ€™s been cobbled together by every government and space agency on the planet and hurled into the depths of space, itโ€™s up to him to conquer an extinction-level threat to our species. And thanks to an unexpected ally, he just might have a chance. Part scientific mystery, part dazzling interstellar journey, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martianโ€“while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.

On The Road by 6476883|Jack Kerouac book cover

๐Ÿ“˜ On The Road

Described as everything from a "last gasp" of romantic fiction to a founding text of the Beat Generation movement, this story amounts to a nonfiction novel (as critics were later to describe some works). Unpublished writer buddies wander from coast to coast in search of whatever they find, eager for experience. Kerouac's spokesman is Sal Paradise (himself) and real-life friend Neal Casady appears as Dean Moriarty.

Station Eleven by 10894256|Emily St. John Mandel book cover

๐Ÿ“˜ Station Eleven

One snowy night Arthur Leander, a famous actor, has a heart attack onstage during a production of "King Lear." Jeevan Chaudhary, a paparazzo-turned-EMT, is in the audience and leaps to his aid. A child actress named Kirsten Raymonde watches in horror as Jeevan performs CPR, pumping Arthur's chest as the curtain drops, but Arthur is dead. That same night, as Jeevan walks home from the theater, a terrible flu begins to spread. Hospitals are flooded and Jeevan and his brother barricade themselves inside an apartment, watching out the window as cars clog the highways, gunshots ring out, and life disintegrates around them. Fifteen years later, Kirsten is an actress with the Traveling Symphony. Together, this small troupe moves between the settlements of an altered world, performing Shakespeare and music for scattered communities of survivors. Written on their caravan, and tattooed on Kirsten's arm is a line from Star Trek: "Because survival is insufficient." But when they arrive in St. Deborah by the Water, they encounter a violent prophet who digs graves for anyone who dares to leave. In a future in which a pandemic has left few survivors, actress Kirsten Raymonde travels with a troupe performing Shakespeare and finds herself in a community run by a deranged prophet. The plot contains mild profanity and violence.

Sea of Tranquility by 10894256|Emily St. John Mandel book cover

๐Ÿ“˜ Sea of Tranquility

Edwin St. Andrew is eighteen years old when he crosses the Atlantic by steamship, exiled from polite society following an ill-conceived diatribe at a dinner party. He enters the forest, spellbound by the beauty of the Canadian wilderness, and suddenly hears the notes of a violin echoing in an airship terminal--an experience that shocks him to his core. Two centuries later a famous writer named Olive Llewellyn is on a book tour. She's traveling all over Earth, but her home is the second moon colony, a place of white stone, spired towers, and artificial beauty. Within the text of Olive's best-selling pandemic novel lies a strange passage: a man plays his violin for change in the echoing corridor of an airship terminal as the trees of a forest rise around him. When Gaspery-Jacques Roberts, a detective in the black-skied Night City, is hired to investigate an anomaly in the North American wilderness, he uncovers a series of lives upended: The exiled son of an earl driven to madness, a writer trapped far from home as a pandemic ravages Earth, and a childhood friend from the Night City who, like Gaspery himself, has glimpsed the chance to do something extraordinary that will disrupt the timeline of the universe. A virtuoso performance that is as human and tender as it is intellectually playful, Sea of Tranquility is a novel of time travel and metaphysics that precisely captures the reality of our current moment.

ONE OF BARACK OBAMAโ€™S FAVORITE BOOKS OF THE YEAR โ€œThe best science-fiction nonfiction novel Iโ€™ve ever read.โ€ โ€”Jonathan Lethem "If I could get policymakers, and citizens, everywhere to read just one book this year, it would be Kim Stanley Robinsonโ€™s The Ministry for the Future." โ€”Ezra Klein (Vox) "One hopes that this book is read widelyโ€”that Robinsonโ€™s audience, already large, grows by an order of magnitude. Because the point of his books is to fire the imagination."โ€•New York Review of Books "If thereโ€™s any book that hit me hard this year, it was Kim Stanley Robinsonโ€™s The Ministry for the Future, a sweeping epic about climate change and humanityโ€™s efforts to try and turn the tide before itโ€™s too late." โ€•Polygon (Best of the Year) "Masterly." โ€”New Yorker "[The Ministry for the Future] struck like a mallet hitting a gong, reverberating through the year ... itโ€™s terrifying, unrelenting, but ultimately hopeful. The Overstory by 13036558|Richard Powers book cover

๐Ÿ“˜ The Overstory

*The Overstory* unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late-twentieth-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An Air Force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits a hundred years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light. A hearing- and speech-impaired scientist discovers that trees are communicating with one another. These and five other strangers, each summoned in different ways by trees, are brought together in a last stand to save the continent's few remaining acres of virgin forest. There is a world alongside oursโ€”vast, slow, interconnected, resourceful, magnificently inventive, and almost invisible to us. This is the story of a handful of people who learn how to see that world and who are drawn up into its unfolding catastrophe.

The Mortal Storm by 2344766|Phyllis Bottome book cover

๐Ÿ“˜ The Mortal Storm

Pre-World War II Ficton. It is rebellious Fraulein Freya Toiler's birthday and she does not want to spend it with her cheeky brothers. She wants to do something special; something exciting and out of character of her. Well, she certainly does that ... as she wanders down the mountain to town, she is attacked, and very nearly raped by a group of town hooligans, only be saved from this disgusting ordeal by a well respected young and handsome Russian, Hans Breitner. As he and she ''... stopped to put on crampons so that they could more freely get through the trees,'' they became better acquainted and she learned the most unbelievable thing about this nice boy: he is not just a Russian, but a Communist Russian preparing to fight against the upcoming Nazi regime. ''People call Communists 'red,' and think of us under bad names--as if we attacked all they held dear, but Communists attack only selfishness. It is Nazis who attack knowledge; degrade women; persecute Jews; and drag their people back into serfdom. All we ask is a share of what our country possesses---for which we agree to work.'' But Communists,'' Freya objected, ''are not perhaps necessary at all---I do not think their way of living as good as **these new Hitler Brown Shirts, of whom my brother Olaf is one. Olaf could not be one unless the Nazis had wise and noble aims.''** What follows for these two young people and the reader, is the horrific catastrophe started by these ''wise & noble Hitler Brown Shirts.'' .... Lest we Forget.

A Plague upon Humanity by 6921027|Daniel Barenblatt book cover

๐Ÿ“˜ A Plague upon Humanity

"In wartime Japan's bid for conquest, humanity suffered through one of its darkest hours, as a hidden genocide took the lives of hundreds of thousands of innocent people. Cloaked in secrecy and protected under the banner of scientific study, the best and brightest of Japan's medical establishment volunteered for a major initiative in support of the military that involved the systematic murder of Chinese civilians. With the help of the United States government, they were allowed to get away with it. Based on important original research, this book reveals as never before the full extent of this crime, in a story that is as compelling as it is terrifying." "Beginning in 1931, the military of Imperial Japan came up with a new strategy to further the nation's drive for expansion: germ warfare. But they needed help to figure out how to do it. So they recruited thousands of doctors and research scientists, all of whom accepted willingly, in order to develop a massive program of biological warfare that was referred to as "the secret of secrets." This covert operation consisted of horrifying human experiments and germ weapon attacks against people whose lives were seen as expendable, including Chinese men, women, and children living in Manchuria and other areas of Japanese occupation. Even American POWs were targeted." "At the forefront of this disturbing enterprise was an elite organization known as Unit 731, led by Japan's answer to Joseph Mengele, Dr. Shiro Ishii. Under Ishii's orders, captives were subjected to deeds that strain the boundaries of imagination. Men and women were frozen alive to study the effects of frostbite. Others were dissected without anesthesia. Tied to posts, victims were infected with virulent strains of anthrax and other diseases. Entire cities were aerially sprayed with fleas carrying bubonic plague. All told, more than five hundred thousand people died. Yet after the war, U.S. occupation forces under General Douglas MacArthur struck a deal with the doctors of Unit 731 that shielded them from accountability for their atrocities." "In this documented work, Daniel Barenblatt has drawn upon startling new evidence of Japan's germ warfare program, including firsthand accounts from both perpetrators and survivors. Authoritative, alarming, and gripping from start to finish. A Plague upon Humanity is a investigation that exposes one of the most shameful chapters in human history."--Jacket.

Skye Falling by 11910485|Mia McKenzie book cover

๐Ÿ“˜ Skye Falling

**A woman whoโ€™s used to going solo discovers that thereโ€™s one relationship she canโ€™t run away from in this buoyant novel, a probing examination of the complexities of family, queerness, race, and community** When she was twenty-six and broke, Skye didnโ€™t think twice before selling her eggs and happily pocketing the cash. Now approaching forty, Skye still moves through life entirelyโ€”and unrepentantlyโ€”on her own terms, living out of a suitcase and avoiding all manner of serious relationships. Maybe her junior high classmates werenโ€™t wrong when they voted her โ€œMost Likely to Be Singleโ€ instead of โ€œMost Ride-or-Die Homie,โ€ but at least sheโ€™s always been free to do as she pleases. Then a twelve-year-old girl tracks Skye down during one of her brief visits to her hometown of Philadelphia and informs Skye that sheโ€™s โ€œher egg.โ€ Skyeโ€™s life is thrown into sharp relief and she decides that it might be time to actually try to have a meaningful relationship with another human being. Spoiler alert: Itโ€™s not easy. Things get even more complicated when Skye realizes that the woman she tried and failed to pick up the other day is the girlโ€™s aunt, and now itโ€™s awkward. All the while, her brother is trying to get in touch, her mother is being bewilderingly kind, and the West Philly pool halls and hoagie shops of her youth have been replaced by hipster cafรฉs. With its endearingly prickly narrator and a cast of characters willing to both challenge her and catch her when she falls, this novel is a clever, moving portrait of a woman and the relationships she thought she could live without.
