Books like The house of twenty thousand books by Sasha Abramsky

Sasha Abramsky’s *The House of Twenty Thousand Books* chronicles the remarkable life of his grandfather, Chimen Abramsky (1916‑2010), a Jewish book dealer, antiquarian, and self‑educated polymath. A lifelong passion for books and a quest for enduring ideology led Chimen to amass a vast private library at 5 Hillway, London. His collection spanned Jewish orthodoxy, socialist literature, and liberal thought, attracting celebrated writers such as Isaiah Berlin and Eric Hobsbawm. Through photographs and careful recollection, the book examines Chimen’s evolving worldview—from his early years in Jewish orthodoxy, through communist influences in youth, to a mature liberal stance—while situating his family story within the broader currents of twentieth‑century history. The narrative offers insight into the intellectual life of British Jewish communities, the book‑selling industry, and the role of rare-book dealers in preserving cultural heritage.
