Books like Red April by Santiago Roncagliolo

Set against the backdrop of Peru’s Blood‑Moon Holy Week, Santiago Roncagliolo’s Red April examines a society torn by ideological terror and brutal state counterinsurgency. Newly appointed to the case, prosecutor Felix Chacaltana Saldivar faces a murder investigation that forces him to confront the moral decay that pervades an entire nation. With a narrative that echoes classic noir, the novel blends meticulous investigative detail with an unsettling portrait of political corruption, bribery, and enforced disappearances. As the plot twists, Chacaltana’s personal isolation deepens, revealing the psychological toll of a country where death is the only certainty for many civilians and officials alike. Red April is a gripping study of power, guilt, and survival, offering a powerful entry point into contemporary Latin American crime fiction while maintaining the suspense and depth characteristic of historical detective narratives.
