Books like Genie by Russ Rymer

When a young girl and her nearly blind mother arrive at a Los Angeles welfare office in November 1970, they uncover twelve years of severe abuse. The girl, later known as Genie, had spent her childhood locked in a chair in a silent suburban home, deprived of language, social interaction, and basic sensations. Her sudden emergence creates unprecedented excitement among scientists—especially linguists—seeking insight into how the human brain acquires language. As Genie learns to walk, speak, and navigate the world, her progress offers both answers to linguistic questions and deeper reflections on humanity. However, the researchers who become her caregivers and friends face ethical dilemmas, ambition, and jealousy that ultimately hinder her development and lead to her disappearance. Russ Rymer weaves Genie’s reluctant journey toward adulthood with intense debates over her treatment, crafting a thoughtful, engaging narrative that illuminates complex linguistic theories and the tragic nature of her story.
