Books like The Abbey Governess by Rosemary Craddock

Anne Clifford arrives at Thornby Abbey in autumn 1826 to take up the position of governess to Colonel Ryder's two daughters. Her predecessor has mysteriously disappeared, and from the outset it becomes clear that a hostile observer is watching her movements. The Abbey’s atmosphere is tense, with long‑standing family feuds simmering beneath a veneer of polite society. As Anne settles into her role, she becomes attached to her employer and the household, but a sudden death shatters the fragile peace. With everyone in the house possessing motive and opportunity, Anne must navigate the dangerous terrain of both external threats and internal suspicion to uncover the truth behind the tragedy. Set in the early 19th century, the novel blends elements of gothic intrigue with the tender dynamics of a governess’s life, exploring themes of loyalty, secrecy, and the ways in which power is wielded within a family’s walls.
