Along the way he met tribal elders, teenage soldiers, Taliban commanders and foreign‑aid workers, and even adopted a veteran fighting mastiff he named Babur. Through these encounters—touching, confounding, surprising and sometimes humorous—Stewart illuminates the forces of tradition, ideology, and allegiance that shape life in Afghanistan’s many diverse places.
