When a June dawn is shattered by a wave of bombings that halt London, Dr. Simon Swann—a middle‑class, liberal physician—dives into the rubble with a desperate mission that only the city’s most fragile residents can answer. Forty‑three years earlier, on a quiet Sri Lankan beach, a girl named Alice Fonseka pedals her bicycle, dreaming of a future beyond her island’s looming civil war. Years later, with her mother Sita, she arrives in England, leaving behind her grandfather and a homeland on the brink of conflict. Alice’s transformation from a bright, hopeful girl into a woman trapped by a loveless marriage and a son’s needs unfolds against the backdrop of early‑21st‑century London—a city reshaped by mass migration, political tension, and the threat of terrorism. As her story and Simon’s mission collide, the novel explores how war, identity, and the search for belonging ripple through lives across continents.
