Books like Oscar Wilde by Richard Ellmann

Richard Ellmann’s biography of Oscar Wilde charts the dazzling rise of a brilliant Victorian writer and conversationalist, whose Irish roots, flamboyant fashion, and daring flirtations with the period’s leading actresses and men set him apart. Ellmann describes Wilde’s swift ascent to literary prominence, his influence on European literary circles—especially in France during the "belle époque"—and his controversial relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas, which led to persecution, imprisonment, exile, and ultimately death in darkness. Through meticulous research, the book offers a critical portrait of Wilde as a radical aesthetic proponent whose artistry produced enduring impacts on both the London and Parisian art scenes, while unflinchingly exposing the societal forces that suppressed and ultimately destroyed one of the era’s most celebrated figures.
