Books like The Abortion - An Historical Romance 1966 by Richard Brautigan
Richard Brautigan’s novel *The Abortion* centers on a librarian in a peculiar California library that welcomes books from all walks of life. Submissions range from crayon stories by children, teenage angst narratives, to old‑timers’ memoirs. The library’s cataloguing system operates by the librarian’s intuitive judgment; books are placed on dust‑free shelves that seem most fitting, rather than following the Dewey Decimal system. The novel lampoons the literary establishment, describing the collection as “the unwanted, the lyrical and haunted volumes of American writing.” Despite its playful tone, the work offers a sharp commentary on what constitutes legitimate literature in America.
First published in 1971 by Simon & Schuster, the title has often been shortened to *The Abortion* in subsequent printings.
