When her mother signs up to compete on the 1980s television quiz show "The $20,000 Pyramid," twelve‑year‑old Marlo finds herself juggling reality and bewildering, time‑defying notes from an anonymous source. As the city hums around her, Marlo must piece together the cryptic messages while coping with her father’s absence and forging new friendships in a world where the past and future blur. The novel captures the intimacy of a fatherless family and the quirky intricacies of preteen life in a nostalgic 1970s–80s New York backdrop, blending ordinary family drama with a playful exploration of time and space. It is a coming‑of‑age story that balances humor, mystery, and the everyday challenges of growing up without a father, while inviting readers to consider how small moments can ripple across the continuum of time.
