Books like A Hint of Heather by Rebecca Hagan Lee

Neil Claremont, the Earl of Derrowford and a seasoned officer of the Royal Corps of Engineers, is dispatched to the Scottish Highlands to construct a royal fortress. While carrying out his duty, he is kidnapped by the Clan MacInnes, who seek a bridegroom for their disrupting lairdess, Lady Jessalyn MacInnes. Reluctant and bewildered, Neil must navigate the turbulent clan, its women, children and elders, and the anti‑crown allegiance of its headwoman. Faced with a marriage he did not seek, the conflict between his obligations to the Crown, his profession as an architect, and an unexpected attraction to Jessalyn creates a tense, romantic, and war‑tainted backdrop. As the Highland warriors prepare to raid potential suitors, Jessalyn must grapple with her role as a new laird and the demands of a clan in ruin after war and poverty. Neil’s presence forces the clan to consider a future that might combine skill, love, and a chance to restore the MacInnes’ fortunes—while the political weight of a union with an enemy of the King looms large.
