Books like Below Stairs by Powell, Margaret.

Below Stairs is Margaret Powell’s autobiographical account of her career as a kitchen maid in the great houses of England, beginning in the 1920s. Starting with her humble origins on the beaches of Hove, Powell describes the grueling early‑morning routines, long shifts that extended well into the night, and the hidden social hierarchies that defined domestic service. Her narrative is peppered with sharp wit and warm recollections of the mistresses, housemaids, and errand boys she encountered, giving readers an intimate glimpse of the world that once roamed behind the doors of Downton Abbey and 165 Eaton Place. The book details the challenges of being a lower‑rank servant, the humorous yet often harsh interactions with superior staff, and touching stories such as that of Agnes, an under‑parlormaid who was dismissed for a scandal. Powell’s story is a testament to resilience and determination, as she never stopped aspiring to better circumstances while serving the house’s wealth and power.
