Books like Strange and inconvenient things by Polly Horvath

When Jane’s stepfather loses his job in Saskatchewan, the family prepares for an ordinary automobile journey across the Canadian prairies. Their plans quickly spiral when they acquire a mysterious bag that may contain stolen money, propelling them through unfamiliar territory. The trip takes them far beyond the familiar confines of their rural home, ultimately bringing them into the wide, sun‑baked landscapes of Nevada. Along the way, the family confronts unexpected challenges, navigates the complexities of a changing dynamic, and learns the unpredictable ways that family life can shift. The novel depicts the day‑to‑day realities of rural ranch life and the hardships of being a family caught in unforeseen circumstances. It explores themes of resilience, trust, and the bonds that tie family members together, even when the road takes them into unfamiliar places. Set against the backdrop of Saskatchewan and Nevada, the story gives a rare glimpse into the everyday adventures and trials faced by families moving between diverse landscapes.
