Ninety Degrees North by 7659595|Fergus Fleming book cover

πŸ“˜ Ninety Degrees North

It was once believed that the North Pole was surrounded by an open polar sea. Some of the attempts to prove this theory and to reach the pole itself once the theory was abandoned are the subject of this book. Fleming, author of the critically acclaimed Barrow's Boys, provides an entertaining history of the many failed attempts to reach the North Pole, from the hardship of the Kane expedition of 1853 through the Amundsen-Ellsworth North Pole sighting via airship in 1926. Though not all polar attempts in this time period are covered, many of the major attempts are recounted and analyzed, providing a story that is both awe-inspiring and humorous. Drawing on research from published and unpublished accounts, Fleming tells the stories of the failed land/sea attempts by such polar adventurers as Edward Nares, Fridtjof Nanson, Charles Francis Hall, August Petermann, and George Washington de Long, as well as the fatal attempt by Sweden's Salomon August AndrΒ‚e by balloon. The controversial topic of who first stood at 90-degrees North is not answered here; only through the investigation of Frederick Cook's and Robert Peary's expeditions does the reader learn that neither can conclusively claim this achievement.

Arctic dreams by 6965371|Barry Lopez book cover

πŸ“˜ Arctic dreams

Barry Holstun Lopez: β€œArctic Dreams; Imagination and Desire in a Northern Landscape” ( 1986) This is an account of the author's exploration of the Western Arctic region, between Bering Strait and Davis Strait. It is an account both of the natural history of the Arctic, and equally of how the Arctic grips the human spirit and imagination. The chapters are rich in their descriptions of the Arctic –of the physical land itself, the native peoples that the author met, the Arctic animals and plants, both terrestrial and aquatic, the ice and the Arctic light that make the region so distinctly different from the temperate and tropical parts of Earth. But Lopez also gives us a sense of how the Arctic fascinates the mind and spirit – through his own personal experiences and through the history of the Arctic - both of the native peoples and the discovery expeditions.

The last Viking by 5502150|Stephen R. Bown book cover

πŸ“˜ The last Viking

The life of Roald Amundsen, the greatest of all polar explorers, has never before been told in its full brilliance, heartbreak, and glory. As the 20th century began, the four great geographical mysteries -- the Northwest Passage, the Northeast Passage, the South Pole, and the North Pole -- remained blank spots on the globe. Within 20 years Amundsen would claim all four prizes. Renowned for his determination and technical skills, both feared and beloved by his men, unfairly vilified for beating Robert Scott in the race to the South Pole, Amundsen towers over the end of the heroic age of exploration, which soon after would be tamed by technology, commerce, and publicity. Feted in his lifetime as an international celebrity, pursued by women and creditors, he died in the Arctic on a rescue mission for a rival explorer. Stephen R. Bown has unearthed archival material to write a fast-paced tale with the grim immediacy of Apsley Cherry-Garrard, the inspiring detail of The Endurance, and the suspense of Jon Karkauer. The Last Viking is both a masterly biography and a cracking good story. - Jacket flap.
