Books like Sir Apropos of Nothing by Peter David

Peter David’s *Sir Apropos of Nothing* introduces a scarred yet clever rogue who once betrayed a helpless tavern wench and now faces the consequences years later. The eponymous hero, who has inherited a limp and a disdain for traditional honor, arrives at King Runcible’s court with three aims: locate his father, exact revenge, and enrich himself. Despite his cynicism, he is drawn into a series of perilous adventures while serving as squire to the elderly Sir Umbrage of the Flaming Nether Regions. His tasks—ranging from escorting the king’s daughter to confronting a berserk phoenix, murderous unicorns, and potentially psychotic royalty—test his survival skills and quick thinking. David blends humor, slapstick, and dark moments to craft a mythic quest that is both comedic and unsettling, echoing the spirit of classic roguish heroes.
