Subway Art chronicles the rise, fall, and resurgence of New York’s subway graffiti scene, blending vivid photographs with cultural context to show how street art evolved into a celebrated global movement.

When a disillusioned trans lesbian leaves New York, she embarks on a road‑trip that compels her to reassess her identity, relationships, and place in a punk‑influenced world.

Organized geographically by country and city, more than 100 of today's most important street artists (including Espo in New York, Shepard Fairey in Los Angeles, Os Gêmeos in Brazil, and Anthony Lister in Australia) are profiled alongside key examples of their work. The evolution of street art and graffiti within each region is also chronicled, providing essential historical context.

*Street Art* captures and explores the works and philosophies of the most prominent street artists of today, often in their own voices, revealing what is behind these familiar images —from the influence of Christo's early public projects to Keith Haring's chalk drawings, John Ahearn's life-sized plaster casts, and Richard Hambleton's shadowy figures, to the 50-foot-long graffiti murals by Lee, Futura 2000, and Noc 167 that have given new life to subway ears. These stunning images —from the most recognizable to the lesser known, but equally compelling— taken by the top photographers who have been documenting this owrk since its early days, are complemented by informative captions and a lively, anecdotal text. Written for both the art enthusiast and the general reader,, *Street Art* is as accessible as the art it documents.
