In the bleak winter of the Great Depression, oil rules East Texas. The Stoddard ladies—Mayme, Jeanine, and Bea—follow their father through towns as he works pipeline jobs, meanwhile mother Elizabeth strives to turn each temporary home into a sanctuary.\nA year later, a drought and a tragic accident leave Elizabeth and the girls alone, forcing them to abandon the itinerant life and return to their ancestral farm. Jeanine, a determined and stubborn young woman, takes on the farm’s rebuilding, yet the land’s debts loom large. To survive, the sisters turn to a wildcat oil well and a prized racehorse named Smoky Joe, riskily betting on both to secure their future.\nThe novel follows their trials and resilience amid the harsh social conditions of Depression‑era Texas, highlighting themes of family, perseverance, and the pursuit of better days.
