Beverly Howard has just begun her training as a Starfleet medical cadet on the Academy’s first‑year program. Alongside her roommate, Claire Voy, Beverly is already at risk of probation after being caught skipping class to explore a nearby San Francisco excavation. Commander Max Wiley, who teaches holodeck medical emergencies, brings them to the admiral’s office and issues a stern warning. When Claire’s partner is injured during a medical emergencies exercise, Commander Wiley accuses Claire of causing the accident. Believing that duty—and perhaps truth—must be followed, Wiley’s accusation places Claire’s future on the line. Facing a potential expulsion, Beverly embarks on a personal investigation that leads her from computer labs to the admiral’s office, searching for evidence that will prove Claire’s innocence. With the help of the android Data, Beverly must clear her roommate’s name while avoiding the Academy’s disciplinary action against herself. The story explores themes of loyalty, integrity, and the weight of command decisions within the Starfleet Academy environment.
