Books like Shorter Oxford English Dictionary by Oxford Dictionaries

The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary traces its origins as an abridgment of the full Oxford English Dictionary, evolving through six editions since 1933. Each edition has expanded coverage, incorporating revisions, addenda, and major updates to etymologies. The 2002 Fifth Edition reaffirmed its connection to the original 20‑volume OED, while the Sixth Edition, published in 2008, provides a complete update and refresh, including 2,500 new words and senses and thousands of antedatings drawn from the Oxford English Corpus. With more than 600,000 entries, it spans contemporary usage across North America, the UK, Commonwealth, and Caribbean varieties, and preserves vocabulary from Shakespeare, Milton, the Authorized Version of the Bible, and Spenser’s Faerie Queene. The new edition features a fresh design, a comprehensive review of spelling and defining vocabulary, and an introductory essay by language expert David Crystal on the history of English, making it an authoritative resource for scholars and enthusiasts alike.
