Annie Friesen departs from a lucrative, unsatisfying high‑tech job to explore life as an Amish woman. A job offer, a red dress, and a mysterious Amish woman seeking a husband pull her in conflicting directions. Her parents, determined to sabotage her transition, add pressure, while Rufus Beiler, the Amish carpenter who has won her heart, leaves their future uncertain. When an explosion implicates Annie, she must prove her innocence while grappling with her newfound values. Meanwhile, the Amish parents Eli and Franey Beiler worry over their daughter Ruth’s decision to leave the settlement for higher education in Colorado Springs, where the attentions of Elijah Capp threaten to steer her path. Facing intertwined family dynamics and generational dilemmas, Annie and Ruth confront past secrets to clarify their futures. The novel weaves themes of faith, identity, and the clash between tradition and modernity as the characters navigate complex choices that shape their lives and the broader community.
