Books like Comfort woman by Nora Okja Keller
In "Comfort Woman," Korean‑American novelist Nora Okja Keller explores the intergenerational trauma of war and displacement. Akiko, a World War II refugee, was conscripted as a comfort woman for Japanese soldiers. Now living on the outskirts of Honolulu society, she is haunted by ghosts of her past and by the fragile mental state brought on by those memories.
Beside her, Beccah, born to an American missionary, struggles to reconcile her mother’s pain with her own emerging sense of identity. As Akiko slowly unveils her story, Beccah discovers both her personal strength and the secret gifts inherited from her mother—gifts that grant her protective powers.
Set against the backdrop of Korean diaspora, Japanese occupation, and the immigrant community in Hawaii, the novel blends historical reality with emotional depth, offering a poignant look at mother‑daughter bonds, resilience, and the lingering echoes of past atrocities.
