Books like The Teleportation Accident by Ned Beauman

Egon Loeser works as a set designer for New Expressionist theatre in the waning Weimar Republic. He idolizes the seventeenth‑century master Adriano Lavicini, who invented a teleportation device that, after a catastrophic malfunction, may have unleashed death and the devil. Apathy towards politics and a restless pursuit of the seductive Adele Hitler prompt Loeser to leave Berlin. He journeys through Paris to Los Angeles, where his former Berlin acquaintances re‑emerge in exile under a crime writer’s patronage. There he becomes entangled in a series of murders at Caltech, where a physicist—helped by Adele—seeks to perfect genuine teleportation. Beauman’s novel blends historical detail, Los Angeles noir, speculative science, and satirical commentary to create a layered narrative that explores ambition, obsession, and the perilous edge of innovation.
